Back in 1980 when I became a NAUI Instructor, there was no formal course that taught river diving. No outline for teaching such a course -- nothing. So, based on the countless dives I had made on the Trask, Kilchis, and Nehalem rivers -- all in Tillamook County, Oregon -- I designed the Riving Diver Specialty Course -- for NAUI.
Why river diving?
While rivers don't have near the amount of color and diversity of life than abounds on our oceans, there are special rewards...
Diving the Dam Hole on the Trask River, for example, divers can often experience 40 to 60-pound salmon buzzing all around them!
The Nehalem River offers up a delicacy -- crawdads! You can fill a 5-gallon bucket of them on one tank of air!
And finally, the Kilchis River...
Where students have had the rare opportunity to observe frolicking otters -- both above the surface and underwater!
In the NAUI RIVER DIVING Specialty Course, you'll learn all the proper techniques to safely dive rivers!
Duration: One weekend
Prerequisite: NAUI ADVANCED SCUBA DIVER
Course Fee: $200
Minimum class size: 2
Number of training dives: 3
Includes: Instruction, guided river dives, and certification (upon successful completion).
And yet another plus to RIVER DIVING...
You don't have to rinse off your gear when you get home!
